Prizes

 

The Mersey Orthopaedic Prizes have a very substantial endowment from a number of individual donations and are awarded annually to three outstanding trainees. The prizes are awarded at the Annual 58 Registrars Conference. All eligibility and award criteria are set by the Trustees.

Braithwaite Prize

In honour of Ian Braithwaite, National Trainer of the Year 2011, ran the teaching programme 2005 to 2012.

This prize is open to Mersey T&O trainees including overseas trainees.

The prize is awarded for the best performance in the annual MCQ by a ST3 or ST4 trainee.

The aim of the prize is to encourage study during the first two years of orthopaedic training.

The prize consists of a returnable Trophy, a certificate and £200 (currently).

The decision is made by the TPD and the consultant who runs the annual MCQ and is ratified by the ARCP panel.

Klenerman Gold Medal

In honour of Leslie Klenerman, Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery in Liverpool from 1987 to 1995.

This prize is open to Mersey T&O trainees including overseas trainees.

The prize is awarded to the best trainee in the academic year they first sit and pass the FRCSOrth.

Significant consideration will be given to performance in the final FRCSOrth exam and the award criteria are also based on the annual placement criteria over two years. Scoring domains include knowledge (performance in the Mersey MCQ and FRCSOrth), engagement with education and training, committee work and research

The prize consists of a Gold Medal which the winner keeps, a certificate and £300 (currently).

The decision is made by the ARCP panel and TPD.

Frostick Prize

In honour of Simon Frostick, Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery in Liverpool from 1995.

This prize is open to Mersey T&O trainees including overseas trainees.

The prize is awarded to the trainee with best podium presentation during the conference.

The decision is made by the independent committee adjudicating the presentations.

The prize consists of a Trophy which the winner keeps and a certificate.

Trustees

The Mersey Orthopaedic Prizes are overseen by five Trustees, but the actual decisions regarding the winners are made by the TPD and the ARCP panel.
